Greece unveils new austerity package

"Greece on Wednesday announces a fresh austerity package that inclutes an

• immediate freeze on pensions,
• further salary cuts for public sector workers and,
• sharp increases in excise and value added taxes."

Skv. frétt jákvæð viðbrögð frá Evrópusambandinu:

"Greece's ambitious programme to correct its fiscal imbalances is now on track," José Manuel Barroso, European Commission president, said in a statement."

"In an almost identical statement, Jean-Claude Junker, chairman of the eurogroup of finance minister",,,"Full and timely implementation of fiscal measures, along with decisice structural reforms,,,is paramount," Mr. Juncker siad. "It is as well important for the overall financial stability of the euro area."

"Olli Rehn, the EU's economics and monetary affaors commissioner, said he believed the Greek measures were - or could become - a turning point in the crisis. He said that he was particularly encouraged by the Greece's move to tackle expenditure side."

George Papandreou er greinilega að leitast við, að fá þjóðir Evrópusambandsins til að samþykkja að aðstoða Grikkland. Til þess, er hjálp að, að hafa jákvæðann stimpil á aðgerðunum, frá stofnunum ESB.

Ég skil sannarlega þörfina á efnahags aðgerðum, en skattahækkanir eru varasamar, þegar ástand samdráttar ríkir, því þær hafa mjög öflug samdráttaraukandi áhrif.

Is this the turning point for Greece?

"Greek government bonds rallied for a fourth day in a row, suggesting Athens could borrow from the capital markets this week, as investors are more convinched that the government is committed to deficit cuts.",,,"Significantly, Greek government 10-year bond yields, which have an inverse relationship with prices, have fallen to about 6 per cent - the lowest level since February 11."

 

Þessar nýju aðgerðir virðast vera að skila, batnandi ástandi á mörkuðum fyrir grískar opinberar skuldir.

"Critically, Greece still has much work to do, as bond yields still remain close to 10-year highs. Mr. Papandreou has said he wants to be able to borrow in the capital markets at similar levels to other eurozone countries because of the difficulties for Athens in funding debt at such punitive rates...The country has to pay 2 percentage points more than the next wealest eurozone economy - Portugal - for 10-year debt, an extraordinarily high yield premium over another periperal eruozone economy,,,Strategists say interest payments of 6 per cent to fund 10-year bonds are simply to high and not sustainable over the longer term for a country that has high debt relative to gross domestic product ratios and relies heavily on foreign investment."

En, sérfræðingar telja þó, að markaðir séu enn of óhagstæðir fyrir Grikki, svo að enn sé of dýrt fyrir Grikkland að selja opinber skuldabréf í miklu magni.

Svo, Grikkland er þá ekki enn úr hættu.
